Siimon Reynolds’ book Why People Fail with Kevin Lovewell Chapter 2

Other people don’t kill our dreams – We do! … a continuing discussion about Siimon Reynolds’ book “Why People Fail” with Kevin Lovewell

Chapter 2: Destructive Thinking

ch2Siimon1 frames destructive thinking as the killer of dreams, achievement and all manner of success. He refers to some startling academic studies that show a correlation between pessimism and illness. His evidence is simply put but quite impressively framed; suggesting if it can be scientifically proven that  pessimistic thoughts make you want to give in and affects actions in a bad way, and positive thoughts have exactly the opposite effect, isn’t it worth it to practice positive thought.
Depressed people think that their problems are personal – as in it is their fault and responsibility when bad events occur. They exaggerate the size of the problem, and believe that it is a permanent state of affairs. The opposite of that “negative thought” position, is a healthy obsession with positive thinking. Formulating a program of affirmative thought, breathing and mind “work-outs” will have similar but opposite effect (to negative thought) on our lives and our business.

Siimon outlines two mental techniques to help, they are visualisation and affirmation.

Visualisation is the practice of seeing a mental picture in your mind. This is essentially mental rehearsal of the steps and inevitable successful outcome for a known forthcoming activity. I can personally vouch for the value of visualisation – I know it works!

The second, Affirmation, deals with the technique of saying aloud the words or phrases that you have chosen to help you focus on your goals, increase your belief in yourself and maintain and reinforce happiness and personal motivation. Here are some of the things that the author says are contained in his morning “affirmations”:

I am always happy and relaxedI am highly effective

I exercise five times per week

I have great health and a great body

I enjoy every day

I am clear and focussed

I am always highly motivated

I am always grateful

I uplift others

I am master of my mind

I am a champion

I love my work

The most common reaction to the people who suggest that the power of positive thinking is profoundly beneficial to health and well-being is quite ridicule. Most of us (and it is not an “Australian” thing) – would feel it is a stupid – even harmful and deluded belief. But what if the champions of this paradigm are actually right?

Action Step

In the long run there is no single factor more detrimental to a successful life than the habit of thinking “destructively”.
